Site Gallo-Romain de Sanxay
The Gallo-Roman site of Sanxay, about thirty kilometers south-west of Poitiers, is one of the major archaeological sites of the ancient province of Aquitaine. Nestled in a green meander of the Vonne valley, this small Gallo-Roman town extended over more than 25 hectares and was occupied from the XNUMXst to the XNUMXth century. It underwent an important phase of development and monumentalization during the XNUMXnd c. A.D.
1500 years after its abandonment, the site is reborn through excavations conducted by Father Camille de La Croix who, from 1881 to 1883, uncovers all the monuments of public life as well as some of the residential buildings. . The function of the site has been debated since its discovery. Some wanted to see it as a gathering place or a spa center with an essentially religious vocation.
