Church of Saint-Hilaire-le-Grand - Poitiers
Explore Poitiers, officially recognised as a ‘Ville d'Art et d’Histoire’ (town of artistic and historical importance).
A stopping point on St James's Way to Santiago de Compostela since the 12th century, the Church of Saint-Hilaire-le-Grand is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 11th century, this church dedicated to the famous Poitevin bishop St Hilary has a Romanesque choir and transept with an impressively high ceiling which is wonderfully lit.
Consisting of a remarkably well-balanced set of volumes, the Saint-Hilaire ambulatory opens onto four chapels decorated with Romanesque murals of scenes from the Apocalypse.
