La Manu is the former Weapons Factory of Chatellerault, active from 1819 to 1968. A century and a half of industry which has today become a leisure and culture hub : museum, exhibitions, treasure hunts, skatepark, walks, and even ice rink.
Its emblem? Two red chimneys connected by a spiral staircase: the work “Like two towers”, signed Jean-Luc Vilmouth, which will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2025.
Shall we go up there? The view is worth the detour!
🚂 Le Grand Atelier: on board, we go back in time at La Manu!
Sit back and embark for an immersive journey spanning more than a century, in the heart of Grand WorkshopThis museum, listed as a Historic Monument, covers 3 m² in the factory's former assembly workshops.
Three universes await you in this museum:
-
Car Motorcycle Bike : more than 200 period vehicles and objects to understand how our means of transport have evolved, from 1800 to the present day.
-
Weapons factory : the working life and the know-how that animated Châtellerault for 150 years.
-
Black Cat Cabaret : the shadow of a Parisian icon hovers here! Rodolphe Salis, creator of the legendary Montmartre cabaret, was from Châtellerault. This theatrical nod immerses you in the artistic excitement of the late 19th century.
🛶 A break on the water aboard the Jehan Martin
Want to take a breather?
Climb into the John Martin, a wooden cabin boat, moored just at the foot of La Manu. This traditional boat offers a “mini-cruise” on the Vienne…with a drink in hand, a view of the docks, and a truly peaceful atmosphere. A great way to gently recharge your batteries between two events at La Manu or after the Châtellerault market.
🛼 The Forge de La Manu which encourages sliding… and laughter!
The old forge where blades and gun barrels were once made now hosts... controlled skids at La Manu!
En July and August, the “La Forge” ice rink is transformed into roller gliss, with... sliding sessions galore. Metal has given way to groove and the best hip-swinging dads have ever had. A great excuse for family outings at La Manu.
