Jardin d’Inspiration Médiévale de Nouaillé-Maupertuis
The medieval-inspired garden of Nouaillé combines the medicinal garden, the vegetable garden and bears witness to the characteristics of medieval gardens: enclosed and geometrically ordered in squares.
Using Charlemagne's Capitulary, the town of Nouaillé-Maupertuis created its medieval-inspired garden. While the exact location of the garden in medieval times is unknown, it is known that, according to the Benedictine rule, in place in Nouaillé from the very beginnings of monastic life, manual and agricultural work held an important place.
It allows the monks to continue their mission: caring for the sick. The garden brings together around a hundred plants according to their use and their symbolism: potherbs (chicory, cabbage), legumes (peas, fenugreek), roots (parsnip, burdock), aromatic plants (caraway, savory), medicinal plants (sage, celandine) or dye plants (madder, safflower).
