At the Loudun station, on Sunday September 19, 1886, around one o'clock in the afternoon, the Under-Secretary of State for the Navy, accompanied by the Prefect of the Vienne and the Municipal Council of Loudun took their places aboard the inaugural train towards Châtellerault.
The train, which filled up as it stopped, arrived crowded at Châtellerault. The travelers were welcomed by the city authorities then, accompanied by mounted gendarmes and gymnastic societies, they went in procession, bugles and flags at the head, to the sub-prefecture.
These are the words that we can read in the newspapers of the time.
