A l’ombre de l’abbaye

Back

Charroux, in medieval times, was the capital of the Basse-Marche but above all the seat of a very famous and influential abbey throughout the Middle Ages and well beyond. This abbey had dependencies on almost 100 sites going as far as Flanders and England. This high place of Christianity therefore marked its time.
Charroux comes from "Karoffum" for crossroads. This rich medieval town is influenced by the provinces of Poitou, Limousin and Angoumois, through the natural environment, and especially the cultural aspects through the movement of people. Charroux is both an isolated place from the large provincial capitals, but also one of the places of passage between the North and Aquitaine.
The hiker to appreciate the religious architecture, the elements of its medieval town planning, landscapes and viewpoints, valleys accompanied by rocky hillsides...
