It is at the junction of Châtain in Surin integrating the Charente valley in a common portion of the circuit "Le Ruisseau du Roi". The paths crossed are in the northern extension of the plateau of red flint lands of Ruffecois, and are in an atmosphere of Charente landscapes.
With hilly terrain with both slopes and hills, with the small town of Surin which has less than two hundred inhabitants like many other neighbouring towns further south, houses with ballets (covered staircases) can be found among some winegrowers.
Châtain owes its name to the chestnut, Surin would be that of a man called "Sutirius".
Attention is drawn to these houses and barns resting on walls having their base on a wider apparatus with large stones.
This vernacular architecture gives a typicality to these places where the buildings are very beautiful.
