Baptistère Saint-Jean

The Saint-Jean baptistery is one of the oldest Christian monuments in Europe, the oldest parts of which date from the XNUMXth century, the time of Saint Martin and Saint Hilaire, the first known bishop of Poitiers.

It houses an octagonal baptismal pool, then used for baptism by immersion, as well as a very fine set of wall paintings from the XNUMXth-XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries. and a remarkable collection of Merovingian sarcophagi.

The visitor will find the baptistery on one of the circuits allowing to discover the riches of the city, starting from Notre Dame-la-Grande and heading towards the Saint-Pierre cathedral, the Saint-Jean baptistery and the Sainte Radegonde church.
