Abbaye de l’Étoile
The Abbey of the Etoile, in Archigny, owes its name to its founder, Isembaut de l'Etoile, brother of Pierre l'Etoile, founder of the Abbey of Fontgombault, who came to create a hermitage at a place called Font à lime on the lands of Monsieur de Cenvis, a Lord of Chauvigny. The hermitage became a Benedictine community in 1124 which was attached to the order of Citeaux in 1145. Ruined by the 100 Years' War, the commendation regime and the wars of religion, the abbey was sold as state property, became a farm in 1792.
Thanks to one of the sponsors, a canon of the Cathedral of Quebec, the abbey participated in welcoming the Acadian families installed by the Marquis de Pérusse des Cars; which earned him the loyalty of their descendants. The abbey had very great abbots, the best known of which was Isaac de l'Etoile, a great theologian.
