Follow the trail of El Fresco! in the Valley of Frescoes

Nestled in the heart of the Vallée des Fresques, the town of Saint-Savin is a heritage gem. There are many paintings dating from the Middle Ages, at a time when painting was used to tell stories.

The Abbey of Saint-Savin, built in the 11^th and 12^th century houses exceptional Romanesque frescoes from floor to ceiling! This represents almost 700m² of painting. It is sometimes nicknamed “the Romanesque Sistine”.

Through the “Zart y est Fresque” tour, you will enjoy this historical masterpiece by following in the footsteps of Zart, our Poï'z who is passionate about art. Don't panic for the uninitiated! Zabeth will guide you throughout your journey to share with you the juicy anecdotes of each place. Also take the opportunity to take the guided tour of the Abbey independently or with a guide.

Observe the paintings and architectural works to decipher the mysteries and find out who El Fresco is!

A most astonishing journey

Your exploration begins at the foot of the abbey church, the place where Benedictine monks once lived. Continue your way to the church to discover the first fresco of your journey, illustrating the Apocalypse. Once inside, admire the nave where 17 meters above your head unfolds a huge illustration of the Old Testament.

Then head to the Pont Neuf and the Saint-Germain district, which was originally farmland!

Continue on your way and enjoy the various frescoes that line your path as well as the nature that surrounds you!
